Bringing Sexy Back 1988

December 15, 2009

Eleven male contestants took to the Northshore High School stage during intermission of the Fall 1988 talent show. Wearing a brown paper bag over their head and a cardboard box to help conceal their identity, the contestants hoped to win over the audience by their exposed legs alone. With the winner chosen by applause, each contestant pulled out their best pose and dance moves to try and win the title. After all they were contestants in the school’s first ever “Sexy Legs” contest.

See what happened…

Sweet Savage

November 18, 2009

On October 11, 1988, students, parents, and faculty packed the NHS cafetorium in a show of support for their friends and classmates who took to the stage during the fall talent show, Star Search.

The final act of the night featured the musical group, “Sweet Savage”, performing “I Hate Myself for Loving You” by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. The song reached #8 on the Billboard chart in 1988 and has been covered many times over the years. Most recently the song was featured in the 2008 video game Guitar Hero: Aerosmith.

The six members of Sweet Savage were:
Cher Levis – Lead vocals
Corey Reaves – Drums
Danny Babbit - Guitar
Jonathan Logan - Bass
Jonathan Morel - Keyboards
Mike Myers - Guitar

Their performance impressed everyone in attendance including the judges who awarded the band first place.

Reflections: Senior Year

August 15, 2009

For many high school students across the country last week was their first week of school, and the students and faculty of Northshore High School officially kicked off the 28th school year.

Aside from the normal textbook distributions and locker assignments, I couldn’t help but imagine the timid freshmen trying to find their way around campus, the sophomores walking the halls happy not to be freshmen anymore, and the juniors looking forward to the perks of being upperclassmen, like driving to school or receiving their class rings. Finally I imagined the seniors hanging out in the Pit, planning the next skip day, and silently counting the days until graduation.

Twenty years ago, the Class of 1990 entered those same doors as seniors, we walked the same hallways, we sat in the same desks, and we had the same hopes and dreams for our senior year at NHS.

Like a flash in time…Summer quickly turned to Fall, the Winter holiday break came and went, and before we knew it Spring was upon us bringing with it graduation.

So if I could give any words of wisdom to the senior class of 2010, I would simply tell them to enjoy every moment of their senior year, for we, the class of 1990, already know it goes by way too fast.

I originally had intended to post this video back in June to celebrate the class blog's 3rd year with some content we've already seen and some that is still to come. So here's a look back...to the future.

Hold on to the Night 1990

August 1, 2009

April 7, 1990 perhaps the most anticipated night of our Senior year, Prom Night, was finally here.

Most classmates had already begun making their Prom preparations weeks and some even months prior to the big night.

• Ask Someone to Prom (check)
• Purchase Prom Tickets (check)
• Rent Tuxedo/Buy Prom Dress (check)
• Arrange Transportation to the Prom (check)
• Make Dinner Reservations (check)
• Schedule Appointment with a Photographer (check)
• Buy Date’s Corsage/Boutonniere (check)

“Hold on to the Night” was the theme chosen for the 1990 Northshore High School Senior Class Prom. The Class of 1990 broke with tradition when it came to our Senior Prom. In previous years, Prom was always held on campus in the school cafetorium, but the Class of 1990 elected to hold our Senior Prom off campus at the Slidell City Auditorium.

However, this decision brought its own challenges as we were forced to setup & decorate the entire auditorium the morning of Prom. Classmates and parents both volunteered and arrived early on the Saturday morning of Prom to help decorate and setup.

It took several hours of blowing up balloons, running streamers, setting up tables & chairs, erecting our city skyline, and finally hanging the disco ball, but we we’re finally finished. Now it was back home to shower up and get dressed before your date picked you up.

After a final squirt of hairspray, and one final look over in the mirror, you’re ready. Your family is almost as excited as you. You pose for pictures and anxiously you wait.

(Doorbell rings) Your date is there. It’s starting.
